Making Our Legal System Work for Families
When a parent is charged with breaking the law, whole families can be thrust into a legal maze. Parents and children may wind up in juvenile, family and criminal courts concurrently, with each jurisdiction acting separately. Families face critical decisions about separation, divorce, custody and finances as they navigate a system that often treats them as cases, not people. A California Superior Court Judge has created a model to reform how courts help families end the cycle of domestic violence and crime.

"I realized the interrelationship between the criminal court, the family court, the delinquency court, and also the dependency court," he says. "Ideally it would be one judge, one family. But because of all of the different players and the difficulties in terms of having extra DAs and defense attorneys, you've got this separation of knowledge and court orders that can conflict."
By having court officials better trained in family law and collaborating, this innovative interdiction model aims to help families break the cycle of violence and crime. Victims, taxpayers and the court system itself are ultimate beneficiaries of such a strategy.
